The first kontomblé “merger” in North America was held at the East Coast Village many years ago. Elder Malidoma brought the medicine of the kontomblé to the West for the very first time, and a shrine (kontomblé cave) was constructed at what is now the Beer Diviner Brewery to facilitate this initiatory experience. It became necessary to relocate the K shrine on ECV Land, and this year we are committed to making that happen as Elder Malidoma requested.

This is a working, hands-on event where we will be crafting the figurines and consecrating the shrine. So be prepared to be in contact with clay/mud.

Look forward to seeing you!

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE KONTOMBLE?

In African tradition, as in many cultures, there are beings who act as tutelary spirits – as protectors or guardians of the natural world. They reside in nature and protect the elements of nature such as water, mountains, plants and animals.

The Kontomble are one of these beings.

Of course, they are not “spirits” in the real sense of the word – meaning they are non-human beings, small in stature, who reside within other earthly planes of existence, yet not limited as we are to physical reality. They are often invisible to humans, having the ability to reveal themselves in physical form if they wish.

Medicine people who work with these beings may call on their expertise in divination or channeling (what we call voice divination). And as guardians of nature, they can offer guidance in working with the plant and animal kingdom.

Elder Malidoma identified that the Kontomble were active on the ECV Land, one of the reasons it became the East Coast Village. Over the past 20 years, visitors have felt or experienced these beings in various ways. Through “paranormal” activity, through telepathic connection or through dreams.

This event seeks to make a permanent and dedicated “portal” for the kontomble on ECV land. Join us!
